Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the premier party of characters who will split off from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might look unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the group understands precisely where to go next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose death initiated the narrative’s action—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and trusted friend, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the party enter areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter vowed a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them little choice but to head to Timmony in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the rest of the players to assemble the Explorers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can expect finding out which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
